spam

Well we’re back, but I’m not in such a good mood to tell you all about it yet.

I have 430 spam comments to delete. Now if any of you have used MT before you will know that you have to delete each comment individually, and then enter each IP address individually to black list it.

The ‘comments’ option has been there to get feedback from you lot. We started this site to keep you up to date with what we were doing over here, instead of me sending out mass emails every month. I hate mass emails. I used to hate receiving them, and I certainly hated sending them. But there you go. The comments option was there for you. But if I think about it rationally, it doesn’t really make any sense to continue the option. We very very rarely receive any comments from those of you in Montreal & Australia sharing news with us. What I do receive are comments from new friends & fellow bloggers (and I want to say a BIG thank you to you! you know who you are!), and as such I’m sure they will understand my dilemma. If I have to keep deleting spam every day – I’ll never get about to writing anything else. On the other hand, I hate reading blogs that offer no chance of leaving comments. It’s like the writer is saying “what I say goes” there is no opportunity to communicate.

For those of you who don’t blog and therefore won’t know, comments are so nice to receive. You spend hours pouring out words and it’s nice to get feedback or share thoughts every once in awhile. Anyway….

While I’m monotonously deleting comments – you have the opportunity to tell me what you think. Comments to stay, go or you don’t really care! This could have several outcomes… if there is little or no interest shown, I might just pack up the site completely, start again, writing for just myself under another name somewhere where no-one knows me. That has a certain allure to it you have to understand. There are times when I have to censor some of my rants because of fear I may offend someone I know who is probably reading this…

Really there is no threat intended. Just reality…

Anyway, I’ll leave it up to you over the next week or so. Let me know what you think by voting above.

  1. Hi Elissa,

I really enjoy reading about your experiences in Europe. I visit almost everyday!! I don’t comment often, ok very rarely, but I’m always here having a look.
So I hope you keep posting! Say hi to Michelle!

    Alex

  2. Thanks for the suggestion although I’m not sure it’s going to be much good for me, firstly because I’m pretty much just a post and cross my fingers kind of blogger – and secondly, because of that my site is hosted, I don’t get to see all the background files! It has it’s advantages as well as disadvantages. Thanks ever so much for the link, and nice to meet you finally!

  3. You have my sympathy. Three of our blogs have been receiving spam comments. We use WordPress, which allegedly offers mass comment editing but it doesn’t work. I had spam measures in place that prevented any of these comments appearing but, for the sake of tidiness, I wanted rid of them. I also hate all the notification emails…

If it’s the same spammer I’ve got, he uses a different IP each time so blacklisting isn’t much use.

We’ve hacked the php files to silently drop his comments. Life has returned to normal. It’s just a one line hack. Is this an option for you, maybe?

Sorry – this is my first comment, but I get a feed from your blog and read it regularly. I enjoy it. Nice blog. Should have stopped by to say “Hello” sooner.

  4. Elissa,

Sorry to hear that you are angry abouth the situation… I really did not know the joy you can have reading our comments. I often visit your site (+/-4x week) when ever i miss Europe and travelling. I look at all your pictures and kind of envy you two. Please keep posting them, it gives me idea for our next trip with Arthur. I love to hear from the 2 of you even if there is many words I still do not understand (!) French!
Have a nice day, keep your smile and please believe me when I tell you I love your site and promise I will “comment” in the future! Bisous Isabelle
