Quebecois vs French

Christmas is certainly happening here in Glasgow. Yesterday I wandered into town to visit Frasers ‘one day sale’ and you should have seen it! There were millions of people in the store and outside on Buchanon St. It felt like Boxing Day in Montreal. Incredible. All the restaurants were full with queues snaking around the entrances out onto the street. Julie and I opted for Soba. No queue, but it was full, and the service was impossible. There appeared to be one waitress, one barman and one chef – all to feed a neverending stream of hungry shoppers.

We ordered and waited, and waited, Julie took a cab home to check some guests in (she owns a guesthouse) and returned to find we still hadn’t received our main course! It was long, but as always it was worth the wait.

I spent the rest of the afternoon shopping to the tunes of Kylie out in the street…

In the evening we had plans to go to the French Film Festival on at the GFT. Michelle had a girls work dinner organised at the Arthouse Hotel, so Julie and I planned to go see ‘Quebec.Montreal’ – billed here as a Quebec road movie. All was running to plan till we got to the cash to buy our tickets

“Quebec.Montreal viewers please note: unfortunately the film was sent with only French subtitles and not English. Sorry for any inconvenience.”

This was the sign above the ticket booth. What? Why? How ridiculous.

Firstly it annoys me that French people actually request that there be subtitles to a Quebecois film – it’s the same damn language, just a different accent, and secondly, how do you propose to show a French language film with French subtitles to a predominately Scottish audience?

Anyway, suffice to say we didn’t stay. It would have been pure torture for Julie who not only doesn’t speak French but as rule, only ever goes to the cinema with us when we drag her – she doesn’t like it….

A few G&T’s later at the ‘Variety Bar’, and I weaved my way home. Another busy day in Glasgow.
