Calling in favours…

I’m knee deep in safaris at the moment. Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Amboseli, Mara – they’re all starting to look the same to me. I’m told the difference is the range of animals and the distance you have to travel to get there. Then of course you have to choose the standard you want to pay for, luxury, cheap or cheaper and whether you want a 4×4 or a minibus with a roof that pops up, do you want to drive over the potholed ridden roads to get there or take an internal flight to Nairobi, sleep in a hotel, resort or tent, all inclusive or pay as you go…. and on and on and on….

I’m tempted just to wait till we get there and hitch a ride with whoever offers, but in a country that is not the safest, where the bugs all bite and can give you terrible diseases, I think a little more planning might be necessary. Besides, that’s what I do best… plan.

I have to admit though, it’s starting to get to me. Take for instance the internet sites such as Holidays Uncovered and Holiday Truth, what sort of people write in to sites like these? I mean, I never do, does that mean I shouldn’t trust their opinions? Would the sort of people who write in to such sites, and more importantly the sort of people that go on Thomson style trips in the first place have similar expectations and tastes as Michelle and I? Probably not. But yet strangely, I still put some weight in what they have to say…

So on I go, trawling the net for advice from strangers on which safari to book.

Feel free to give me your opinions. In fact, I can honestly tell you we’ll treat any advice from anyone we know with far more reverence, even if it’s from someone we know who knows someone who once upon a time went to Kenya. Just consider it a favour.

  1. I would be inclined to book it when you get there. You’ll probably get a better deal, especially if you can join a tour that just needs a couple more people. Also, you can get more of a sense for the company and guides, vehicles etc in person. I’m sure there are plenty to choose from and they won’t be booked out.
